Hand to Hand
Rugs are constructed in two main ways, by machine and by hand. Both ways offer advantages to the area rug buyer, but I want to concentrate on rugs that are made by hand today.
There are three main ways that rugs qualify as “hand-made” and I would like to explain the differences. No one way is inferior, just different.
Hand-tufted area rugs are made obviously by hand, but with the assistance of a powered tufting gun. This allows the rug maker to place color and yarn where he wants, but gives him the assistance of a tool that speeds the process along. Rugs produced this way are the evolution of the hand-tufting method used for centuries, but because of the relative speed at which these rugs are produced, the price is kept in check. Hand-loomed is the term used to describe a rug that is produced on a loom, similar to weaving, but the process is done manually. Many traditional rugs these days are loomed (woven) by machine, the process however involved a real live person passing the rug yarns through the weft and warp creating patterns and textures. Hand-loomed rugs tend to be one of a kinds and are not mass produced like machine (power) loomed rugs. The rug price is reflected by this intimate contact with the rug.
Hand-knotted rugs are created by a single person or a group of people tying each individual thread into the rug. This is a very labor intensive way to make an area rug, but it is also one of the most traditional ways. Rugs have been hand-knotted for centuries. The art developed in the Middle East and had produced some of the most spectacular examples of area rugs. Because this method is so labor intensive these rugs are usually, but not always, one-of-a-kind and priced to reflect that.
