Naturally Sustainable
Sheep provide us with one of our most popular sustainable rug fibers, wool. It is a completely natural rug fiber, composed of amino acids. Another great thing about wool is the fact that it is totally renewable, sheep can be shorn every 9-12 months. Rugs made from wool are also biodegradable. In soil, wool readily biodegrades to produce nitrogen, sulfur, carbon dioxide and water, all of which are plant nutrients. One other great thing about wool rug fiber is the fact that the sheep that produce these fibers are raised on lands that are quite often unsuitable for most other agriculture purposes.
Wool rug fiber is also good for indoor air quality. It improves the air quality by absorbing common contaminants in indoor air. Wool rug fibers chemically react with harmful gases such as formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide by neutralizing and binding the gases irreversibly in its structure. Rug fibers made of wool are also not a source for dust mites. Wool is non-allergenic and does not give off harmful emissions.
As you can see rugs made from wool are both sustainable and green, so as you’re shopping for area rugs make sure you take a look at the options in wool rug fiber.
