Well not a quiz, more like the answers. Here are some frequently used area rug terms that we thought might make your life easier whilst looking for a rug. Like always, if you’re still confused, our Customer Care specialists are standing by ready to answer you every question.
Hand-Carved: You’ll see quite a few of our rugs that offer hand carving. The carver takes a shears (electric or manual) and carves a “V” outlining a pattern. This technique adds depth and definition to a rug. On a solid color rug, this carving can actually creating the parttern.
Heat-set: This is usually done to synthetic rug fibers. The rug yarn is twisted to add strength and resiliency to it and then the twist is set (more or less permanently) with heat. Think of it as a perm for rug fiber.
Pile: This the actual face of the rug. The fiber you feel is what makes up the pile. The rug pile can be flat (like many Navajo rugs) or “fluffy” like a shag rug.
Border: This is the area around the outside of the rug. It can be patterned or solid, wide or narrow. It defines the outside area of the rug.
Field: The field of a rug is the center portion. It is what is surrounded by the border. Quite often the field is a solid color with a pattern laid into it.
Medallion: The center graphic of a rug. Usually seen in traditional oriental rugs, medallion is generally round or oval in shape, but can take on other shapes as well.
