The Price of Beauty

I don’t know about you, but it seems that every year my budget for decorating my house keeps getting smaller and smaller and my ideas keep getting bigger and bigger. I want to move this wall, get rid of that one, raise the roof, and change out my old tired color schemes. It does seem to cost a pretty penny these days to make all those changes. BUT, and of course there’s a but, I can freshen things up quite a bit, just by changing out some of the rugs in my main areas. A new rug under my dining room table would give the old tired table a new out-look (plus it’s so much less messy than repainting everything). A rug in the bathroom can change me from out-dated to spa-like retreat in no time. The living room, well with new pillows on the sofa that pick out the accent color in the new area rug, presto, a brand new look. Good thing about all of this, it fits within my budget.

While Rugs to My Door likes to tout that we have 1000’s of rugs for any occasion, I would like to take a moment to point out some of our more cost effective ones. Rugs that won’t cost you and arm and a leg; rugs that will spruce your home up and keep you looking like you are right on the edge of fashion.

Let’s start with our exclusive Fashion Source brand. These rugs have “Impeccable Quality and Incredible Value” Not only is the quality great, but the designs are fresh and the colors are new. Take a look at the Abbey Mist rug collection, you get amazing fashion, 100% wool pile all for under $300 for a 5x8 rug. Talk about value!

If you would like something a little bit more traditional in your area rug, check out Abrams Creek. Up-to-date colorings, traditional rug patterns and a 5x8 is under $200

Finally, hand tufted wool rugs from Fusions. Contemporary styling and amazing colors and at a checkbook saving price of under $400. Not too bad for rugs that have so much to offer!

So, if you’re like me and don’t have 1000’s to spend on updating your home, but you still want to look like you know what’s what; brand new rugs from Rugs to My Door could be just the ticket. Where a stylish new look (at a terrific price) is only a click away.

Faux Me and Faux You

It seems that one of the hottest fashion trends out there right now is animal prints. You see them on duvet covers, pillows, candles, blankets, and you know where I’m going with this, rugs. Animal print rugs are another way to bring these faux patterns into your living space. Rugs to My Door brings you several manufacturers that produce animal print rugs. Everything from faux leopard skin rugs, to faux zebra rugs. These fun and contemporary rugs are just a click away (just like all our rugs). If you’re looking for a way to experience the animal print rug trend this is an easy (and inexpensive) way to do it.

Check out this exquisite leopard print rug from Surya. It’s made from 100% New Zealand wool (the finest wool in the world for rugs) This rug is hand made in India and has a special tea wash to give it the patina of an antique rug. And if leopard is not your style Surya has a wonderful zebra print rug made of the same materials and the same process.

The Everest collection of area rugs from Couristan has a few really good examples of animal print rugs within it confines also. These rugs are a bit less expensive than those from Surya, but then again they’re made from cost effective polypropylene. These rugs come in a variety of sizes, and offer a solid border to make it ever more home owner friendly.

One of our best animal print area rug patterns is the Jungle Safari pattern from Milliken’s Signature Collection. All rugs in this collection are made from 100% Stainmaster Nylon. And if you know anything about carpet, you know this is the easiest to clean fiber out there. So, check out a couple of our best selling patterns in this rug collection.

I hope you enjoyed checking out these fun animal print rugs, and if you didn’t find one that you just can’t live without, keep browsing through our vast selection of area rugs.

How about a shag rug that is a bit different. The Delux Leather patterns from Rug Market’s Contemporary collection give you a free flowing shag look, but made from leather. These hip and ultra modern shag rugs will add another level of texture in your room.

Finally, also from The Rug Market is the “Splendid” pattern of uber-fluffy wool and silk shag rugs. Think of slipping your toes into your favorite fluffy sweater and you have the idea here. These rugs come in a multitude of colors to coordinate with any interior.

So don’t let your toes get jealous of all the fluffy sweaters and blankets you swathe yourself in this winter, give them a shag rug to enjoy from Rugs to My Door.

It Doesn't Have to "Match"

So I was watching “What Not To Wear” this weekend and began to realize that people have a hard time with fashion. I also realized that fashion is more than what we wear it is what we put in our homes. Rugs fall under this category. Area rugs become the fashion accessory for our rooms. The rugs we choose reflect our tastes and thoughts about our homes. Well as I watched people stumble all over how to dress them fashionably, it came to me that people have the same issues with how they decorate their homes. What colors to use, how to use pattern, how to mix and match and how to make it all look like a blind person didn’t make the decisions. I heard something very interesting while I was watching my marathon session of this show… “It doesn’t have to match, it has to go.” While this makes so much sense to me, I was hoping to help all of you rug shoppers understand what that simple phrase means.

It’s very simple, rugs don’t have to match your décor perfectly, they need to go. Meaning things need to blend. Blues don’t have to match blues, they need to blend and go. Patterns in your rug don’t have to match your draperies; they do need to “go with” the patterns. Think, nature, greens in trees don’t all match, but when you look at the whole, they go together. So don’t fret when you’re decorating with rugs, give yourself a break, let go, and look at the total picture. Make sure things blend rather than match and your life will be much easier.

So, have at it, it’s not rocket science, take a rug, make a room, enjoy and keep shopping.

Introducing Stainmaster Rugs

More consumers know and trust Stainmaster carpet than any other carpet brand out there and now Stainmaster is getting into the area rug business. As of October 1st all rugs manufactured by Milliken will be made of Stainmaster brand nylon. This is great news for rug buyers, now they can get all the benefits of their Stainmaster carpets in their area rugs.

All Stainmaster carpet and rugs are made from Type 6,6 nylon, the most advanced and strongest nylon fiber out there. Type 6,6 nylon uses a unique molecular structure that gives rugs made from it the ability to resist matting and crushing. It also protects your rugs against fiber loss from high foot traffic.

Your rug made from Stainmaster nylon also has DuPont’s Advanced Teflon Repel System. What does that mean to you? Well, the fibers of your rug actually repel, or “push away” soil and dirt, making it easier for you to keep your rug clean and looking new.

Next, the main reason people trust and buy Stainmaster products, the Stainmaster stain resistance warranty. If you’ve had Stainmaster carpet before, you know all about this, now transfer this amazing ability to resist stains to your area rugs. Rugs made with Stainmaster warrant that the surface pile of your rug will resist stains by food and beverages. Like every warranty there are exceptions, but most things that would stain other products will come out of your Stainmaster rug. (note, your rug will be stain resistant, NOT stain proof)

Finally, when you purchase an area rug made with Stainmaster you can rest assured that your rug will be first quality. Stainmaster does not allow seconds or irregulars, they only test and warrant the finest qualities.

Naturally Sustainable

Sheep provide us with one of our most popular sustainable rug fibers, wool. It is a completely natural rug fiber, composed of amino acids. Another great thing about wool is the fact that it is totally renewable, sheep can be shorn every 9-12 months. Rugs made from wool are also biodegradable. In soil, wool readily biodegrades to produce nitrogen, sulfur, carbon dioxide and water, all of which are plant nutrients. One other great thing about wool rug fiber is the fact that the sheep that produce these fibers are raised on lands that are quite often unsuitable for most other agriculture purposes.

Wool rug fiber is also good for indoor air quality. It improves the air quality by absorbing common contaminants in indoor air. Wool rug fibers chemically react with harmful gases such as formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide by neutralizing and binding the gases irreversibly in its structure. Rug fibers made of wool are also not a source for dust mites. Wool is non-allergenic and does not give off harmful emissions.

As you can see rugs made from wool are both sustainable and green, so as you’re shopping for area rugs make sure you take a look at the options in wool rug fiber.

The Vocab of Rugs

Vocab Quiz

Well not a quiz, more like the answers. Here are some frequently used area rug terms that we thought might make your life easier whilst looking for a rug. Like always, if you’re still confused, our Customer Care specialists are standing by ready to answer you every question.

Hand-Carved: You’ll see quite a few of our rugs that offer hand carving. The carver takes a shears (electric or manual) and carves a “V” outlining a pattern. This technique adds depth and definition to a rug. On a solid color rug, this carving can actually creating the parttern.

Heat-set: This is usually done to synthetic rug fibers. The rug yarn is twisted to add strength and resiliency to it and then the twist is set (more or less permanently) with heat. Think of it as a perm for rug fiber.

Pile: This the actual face of the rug. The fiber you feel is what makes up the pile. The rug pile can be flat (like many Navajo rugs) or “fluffy” like a shag rug.

Border: This is the area around the outside of the rug. It can be patterned or solid, wide or narrow. It defines the outside area of the rug.

Field: The field of a rug is the center portion. It is what is surrounded by the border. Quite often the field is a solid color with a pattern laid into it.

Medallion: The center graphic of a rug. Usually seen in traditional oriental rugs, medallion is generally round or oval in shape, but can take on other shapes as well.

These are just some of the basic rug terms, as time and space permits we’ll add to this list so you can add to your rug education.

A Brief History of the Oriental Rug

The term “Oriental” rug has come to mean a rug regardless of how it was produced or what its origin is that has a traditional pattern to it. This, however, was not always the case. And, in fact, today a true Oriental area rug is produced by hand in Persia, Turkey, India or other country in that same vicinity. And here’s why that is true….

Rug history has to start in pre-history. Almost all of humanity was concentrated at that time in the near or mid-east and almost every tribe made (wove or hand knotted) rugs. Because of that history, modern (well more modern) Oriental area rug production started in Persia and the surrounding countries.

Modern rug creation can be traced to the Middle East and the start of the 16th Century. Masterpiece of area rug art came flowing out of this area, so great was their supremacy that the cities that created these rugs are still known today, their names becoming the patterns we know and love. Tabriz, Kashan, Herat, and Kerman, all centers of rug production, have become house hold names in the area rug industry.

Because of the popularity of these hand made rugs, demand in the west became so great that new materials, dyes, and looming processes were needed to speed up the creation of oriental area rugs. This occurred in the last part of the 1800’s and although the production became mechanized, the designs that were created in Persia remained and became the hallmarks of the area rug industry.

So, as you can see, an Oriental rug can come from many places but its roots lie in the artistry and craftsmanship of the hand tufters and weavers of Persia.

Be Ye Not Afraid.... of Contemporary

Many people are scared of contemporary or modern design. They say it’s too stark or two bland. Well with the many contemporary and modern area rug designs available at Rugs to My Door, we hope to prove those folks wrong.

Our contemporary rugs offer a lot of color and texture. They can be wild or they can be calm. These rugs offer so many decorating ideas that you most certainly will not be limited in your choices.

One of these modern rugs lines is New Wave from Momeni. This rug line is made from 100% wool in style reminiscent of rugs from Tibet. These rugs have striking and colorful designs and remind one of the Art Deco styles popular during the roaring 20’s.

Another great rug collection is the Andy Warhol Collection from Sphinx. Just mention the name and you know you’re going to get interesting and fun contemporary rug designs. Known for his “Pop Art” sensibilities, the Andy Warhol rug collection takes themes from throughout the entire breadth of his work. From his earliest days as a greeting card designer, to his later works in the 70’s.

Finally we have the Fusions rug collection from Fashion Source. This group of rugs offers bold styling and great values. Taking oversized and graphic prints, these rugs are handtufted from wool. The rugs of the Fusion collection are a great way to bring some contemporary flair into your home.

The Looms Norman, the Looms

We could bore you to death with the complete history of rug weaving, but let’s just stick to the high points. We begin with the Jacquard loom invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1805. This was a leap forward in the weaving process allowing weavers to mechanize and weave more intricate patterns. This was combined with the single frame (meaning only one color could be used) Wilton Loom from England and created the modern multi-frame Wilton Loom. A Wilton rug (or carpet) can be woven in many different styles, whether it is cut-pile, loop-pile or a combination of the two. A carved effect can be achieved with this process.

Finally, we come to the type of Wilton weaving that most area rug manufacturer’s use, it’s called a face to face Wilton. Two rugs are woven at the same time (pile side to pile side) then sliced apart. Now add to this that Belgium has a rich history of textile weaving starting with the weaving of tapestries. This history of weaving gives them a unique ability and an edge when it comes to the weaving of rugs. By the mid 19th century Flanders (as Belgium was known at the time) was known to be one of the best producers of fine carpets.

This tradition of area rug weaving has continued into modern Belgium with many companies (such as Capel, Couristan, 828, Dynamic and Loloi) using the expertise of Belgium weavers to create rugs for them. Rugs woven here can be made of many different materials but the most common are polypropylene, wool and a blend of the two. Check out the amazing selection we have of finely woven rugs on our site.

Do I Really NEED a Rug Pad?

Well the short answer is yes, but let me explain why (and not just because we sell it). Rug pad helps protect both the rug and you. The right rug pad will give your new area rug the support and resiliency to stay new looking longer. It will also help keep your rug where you want it (one must protect oneself from the terrors of rug creep!) Can you imagine the hassle of chasing your rug around with a vacuum cleaner because it won't stay put for you to vacuum? So, with that in mind we offer you two solutions for your Rug Pad needs, and they are as follows:

Super-Stop is our most versatile rug pad. It’s made from long lasting vinyl polymers and should be used over all hard-surface materials to keep your rug in place and from sliding out from under you. (Aunt Agnes does NOT need another broken hip!) Super-Stop has been treated to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew and with proper maintenance should retain its non-slip properties for up to 10 years. This pad is easily cut to fit with standard household scissors so you can achieve the proper size.

Our other rug pad is called Magic-Stop. This product is for rugs you put over carpeting. The dry adhesive used in Magic-Stop will keep your new rug from creeping and bunching when you place it over top of other carpets. Treated the same as Super-Stop, this pad will also inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. The dry adhesive is such that it will not transfer to either the carpet you place it over or the rug you place on top of it.

Rug pad comes in very standard sizes; rugs do not. You will need to properly fit your rug pad to your rug. This is very easy. Simply trim the rug pad with a pair of scissors to a size that is about 1-3 inches smaller than the rug you’re placing over it. If you have any questions about what to do, what to order, what size, etc, Danielle in Customer Care is standing by ready to help.

Hand to Hand

Rugs are constructed in two main ways, by machine and by hand. Both ways offer advantages to the area rug buyer, but I want to concentrate on rugs that are made by hand today.

There are three main ways that rugs qualify as “hand-made” and I would like to explain the differences. No one way is inferior, just different.

Hand-tufted area rugs are made obviously by hand, but with the assistance of a powered tufting gun. This allows the rug maker to place color and yarn where he wants, but gives him the assistance of a tool that speeds the process along. Rugs produced this way are the evolution of the hand-tufting method used for centuries, but because of the relative speed at which these rugs are produced, the price is kept in check. Most of the hand made rugs on the Rugs to My Door site are produce this way.

Hand-loomed is the term used to describe a rug that is produced on a loom, similar to weaving, but the process is done manually. Many traditional rugs these days are loomed (woven) by machine, the process however involved a real live person passing the rug yarns through the weft and warp creating patterns and textures. Hand-loomed rugs tend to be one of a kinds and are not mass produced like machine (power) loomed rugs. The rug price is reflected by this intimate contact with the rug.

Hand-knotted rugs are created by a single person or a group of people tying each individual thread into the rug. This is a very labor intensive way to make an area rug, but it is also one of the most traditional ways. Rugs have been hand-knotted for centuries. The art developed in the Middle East and had produced some of the most spectacular examples of area rugs. Because this method is so labor intensive these rugs are usually, but not always, one-of-a-kind and priced to reflect that.

Rugs to My Door has a fine collection of hand made rugs please feel free to browse our selection and see what strikes your fancy.

But it’s NOT beige?!?!

In my wanderings the past couple of days something came to me that I guess I didn’t realize I was consciously doing. I’ve been using color as a neutral back drop for things in my home. Surprise huh? Well it’s true, a neutral doesn’t have to be beige, grey or white, it can just as easily be green or brown. Actually, that’s what I realized; Green and Brown make GREAT backgrounds. Don’t believe me; take a walk through the woods. How many times do you see brilliant flowers that are set off by the background of the green leaves or brown bark? Warm colors LOVE being surrounded by brown and green. Yellow looks more yellow when placed next to green. Red is more brilliant when paired with brown. So as you’re looking for colors to blend with your current furnishings, don’t discount more color. Brown and green make acceptable if not spectacular neutrals.

Look at some of these interesting brown and green rugs and think about how easy it would be to incorporate them into a design.
Here's a contemporary one from our Abbey Mist Collection. that would make a great back drop to some vibrant colors or even just plain ole beige.

Even traditional designs in green and brown can lend themselves to this concept. Check out this rug from our Abram's Creek Collection.
