The best rug for your home

Take a look at some of the headings I created below. If your home fits into any of these categories then read the bit of information below it on why certain types of rug constructions and fibers will make you happiest for the longest.

My Home is very busy with kids and maybe even pets. Sometimes I wonder if my whole room is a mud room!
For this sort of room, the ideal sort of fiber is olefin. Olefin is often also known by the name Polypropylene. We call the fiber Polypropylene on our site. The great thing about Polypropylene is that you literally cannot stain it. So if Junior dumps a glass of grape juice on it (yes I said grape juice) it will NOT stain it. Rugs that are made of polypropylene just dont stain. While I could get into the chemical composition details of why that is, suffice it to say that I have had parties at my place where red wine was dumped on my olefin rug and nope...it really did not stain. If you want to know more about the technical mumbo jumbo that makes polypropylene so wonderful check this out.

My home is chill. I don't have a lot going on, but I want the rug to look really good and feel nice on my toes.
Say no more! The perfect fiber for you is wool. Years ago wool was the only fiber used to make floor covering. From wall to wall carpet to area rugs, the only fiber in the game was wool. So where did all these other fibers come from? Well they were created to essentially knock off wool but at a cheaper price. The catch is that as fuel prices have increased the cost of synthetic fibers have caught up with good ol' wool since synthetics are made of petroleum.

Enough about all that though. The one catch about wool is that it tends to fuzz for a while. That means that pieces of the wool will ball up and sit on the surface of the rug. This will happen for about 6 months which means you have to vacuum the rug often. The great news is once it is done the rug will look new for a VERY long time. By long time I mean years and years. I have a wool rug in my bedroom that I have had for almost 10 years and it still looks absolutely brand new. It has been in my living room, my dining room, and now my bedroom. I kept thinking it would wear out and I would toss it but that day hasn't come yet.

For more info on wool and even technical details check this out.

My home is just middle of the road. There isn't a lot of craziness going on, but then it isn't completely calm either.
In that case, I humbly suggest you buy a rug made of Nylon. Nylon is a pretty clever knock off of wool, but it has the benefit of not fuzzing. Sure it won't last as long as wool, but sometimes gettting rid of a rug after several years of use can actually be a good thing, right?

I don't really have a lot to tell you about Nylon. It is just a reliable fiber that tends to make for a pretty good looking rug. For some tech stuff on Nylon, try taking a look at this. If you have questions though please give me a shout and I will chat with you for a bit about it as well.

Closing Thoughts
This is a really abridged version of what works well for homes. If you have questions that are not answered here please give me a call. I can help you figure out exactly what will work for your place. I live rugs day in and day out. They are a lot of fun and can make a place look exciting and new. The catch is that if you don't choose the right fiber the thing will look all worn out when it did not have to. Thanks so much for reading all this. Please make comments...I love reading them :)
