Area rugs made from New Zealand Wool are the standard of excellence in the world of area rugs. The Wools of New Zealand brand guarantees you that you are receiving an area rug made from the some of the finest wools in the world. The Fernmark logo assures you that along with a renewable fiber, you are getting an area rug that has passed demanding tests for durability, color fastness, appearance retention and other qualities you look for in the best area rugs. Nylon is one of those fibers that have changed the flooring industry. Area rugs are no different. Today you can find hundreds of rugs made from this amazing fiber. Nylon is a strong fiber that holds color nicely and is easy to clean and maintain. Area rugs made from this fiber are great for high traffic areas especially if you have a rug made from 100% Stainmaster Nylon. You can expect years of enjoyment from an area rug made from nylon, so take a moment and browse our selection of rugs made from nylon.

One of the most used fibers for area rugs is polypropylene (other wise known as olefin). This fiber is the one to look for when you want an area rug that gives you a lot of value for your dollar. There are a myriad of designs and colors available in rugs made from polypropylene and you are sure to find just the right look. One of the best things about a rug made from polypropylene is the fact that they are virtually impossible to stain and very easy to clean – making rugs made from this fiber a great choice for areas where your family congregates.

Wool is the gold standard for carpet and rug fibers. Area rugs created from wool are rugs that will last for years giving the pleasure of color, design and enjoyment. Wool is one of the fibers that takes dyes the best, giving you a rug with vibrant and rich colors. Wool is also naturally resistant to soil and dirt. Rugs made from wool keep dirt near the surface so they are easily picked up and vacuumed away. Wool is also one of the most resilient fibers, making a rug that looks beautiful for years. Fire Up Spring!

As spring emerges all around us I’m reminded of the dazzling tapestries created in natures bounty. Inside of each season is a pallet of beauty, so lets stop and smell the roses (or atleast appreciate it color). Scarlet the the color of love, passion, blood boiling chemestry… the color of sping. Seen within these hot area rugs are ways that ‘Scarlet’ fever can carry over into your life.

First off is this dazzling ‘Claudius Scarlet’ from the Pompeii area rug collection. The active pattern of this eye-catching Area rug adds vibrance to any room. This Italian crafted rug holds true in quality as well as beauty, made of 100% polypropylene (easy maintenance) its perfect for home or any other setting.

Another of the contemporary scarlet accent rugs that is a must mention (well especially after mentioning the first Pompeii ;-). This ‘Tiberius Scarlet’ rug is as beautiful as it is poular, with its whimsically contemporary design any area this rug adorns with most definitely attract the desired spice of attention. With these last two amazing rugs from Pompeii and the unbelievable deal that accompanies them, you too should be asking yourself “how can you go wrong with a… Pompeii?”

Pompeii and scarlet seamingly weave the perfect rug together hand-n-hand. The contemporary yet essentric design of the Pompeii “Augustus Scarlett” reflects such a desire to be… [clear throat]… heard. Its subtle yet reminescent of those instruments that make us all move and get ‘jazzy with it’. Impecable for that someone who always has that song in mind for that special time, HOT!

Lastly but not least is the alluring and resourceful ‘Nero Scarlet’ from the Pompeii area rug collection. Its floral area rug style is a home spung contemporary design. With its continual vine pattern it presents the growth of a spring and life connotation to any ambience, plus the deliciously vibrant scarlet red is not to be overlooked by any means in this rug.
As you can see the Pompeii collection from Fashion Source is HOT!
so, let your fiery choices carry over into a red hot summer!

South by Southwest

Earlier this week we started talking about how close in style Lodge and Southwest are. That quite often they can be used interchangeably but that there are some differences. Lodge comes from the hunting lodges found in the likes of Montana and Idaho while Southwest design comes from further south and usually brings in elements of Native American and Mexican culture. Now, will a Lodge area rug look at home in a Southwest design, quite likely. And a Southwest rug motif will easily look at home in a Lodge inspired room. They are more or less cousins of the same rugged western tradition of the USA. With that in mind, we explored some of the Lodge looks that we offer at Rugs to My Door and now I want to do the same for the Southwestern rugs that are on our site. We offer hundreds of rugs in this category, so I use these three to wet your appetite so that you will take some time to browse through all the rugs.

Like I wrote earlier, Southwest design incorporates many Native American motifs and ideas. The Navajo rug is one good example of this. But what is more interesting is that these native designs can be found the world over. Native peoples have striking cultures and beautiful art work that transcend borders and nations. So while a rug may come from the designs of tribal lands of Pakistan or Tibet, you will find that the motif looks similar to rugs found in the Southwest United States.

We’ll start out with this flat woven rug from Surya. Flat weaves are popular among many native cultures, including the Native Americans. This rug from the Jeweltone Collection is hand loomed in India of the finest wool. It uses traditional patterns and colors to give you a rug that speaks loudly of the indigenous peoples of this world. Whether you are trying to use it as a traditional tribal piece or in a beautiful Southwestern design, this rug will work wonderfully.

Next, is a rug from our Fashion Source collection. The Beekman Place Collection of rugs are made from 100% polypropylene, making them easy to clean and inexpensive to buy. Again, a very traditionally tribal motif is used to make this rug perfect for a Southwestern designed room. The colors are earthy and easy to incorporate into existing color schemes. The design is bold and ready to take center stage in a room requiring a Southwestern (or Lodge) edge.

Our last rug example is from Dalyn Rug Co. This is the Sierra pattern from their Santa Fe collection of Southwestern area rugs. With the colors your would traditionally expect from a rug of this type, but made from 100% nylon which means you have one of the sturdiest and most resilient of the flooring fibers available. With a name like Santa Fe you know you are getting designs that truly reflect the designs of the great American Southwest. Make sure you take a look at all the rugs in this collection; I think you will find some great examples.

There, you have two “kissin cousins” Southwest and Lodge, and if you’re ready for something a bit different from traditional and contemporary area rugs, take a look at these fascinating genres of design and rugs.

Homing in on Lodge

I often write about interesting contemporary area rugs, or beautiful traditional rugs, but this past week I was reminded that there are homes out there that require something quite different. There are homes that require a rug that has the influence of Southwestern motifs and/or the Lodge feel. These two categories are very similar but do have a distinct difference. So, I thought I would take a couple of posts to show off some of our rugs that fit into these categories. I’m going to start with rugs that fall into the Lodge category. I have friends that live in a log home (not that this is by any means the only place you can use a Lodge area rug) and they keep pestering me to stop highlighting all the contemporary rugs we have. So for them, here are some amazing Lodge looks that will fit into a log home, a mountain retreat or just a suburban home that wants that feel.

This first rug comes to us from Shaw Living. Its panel design makes it versatile in most homes, but it looks especially fetching in a Lodge setting. This is a way to do Lodge without having to have animals, pinecones and trees. This rug is machine tufted out of 100% eco-friendly New Zealand Wool and comes in four easy to use sizes. (Don’t tell anybody but this rug would also work in a Southwest décor)

Fashion Source is one of our most popular brands because they combine some of the best looks out there with some of the best values in area rugs. It’s no exception when they do a Lodge Rug. The Pinnacle design in the Poplar Ridge collection is a great example of this. With the motifs of granite and leaves (and its deep rich coloring) this rug works beautifully in rooms that are trying to achieve the Lodge look. It is made from 100% polypropylene which means this area rug can stand up to the abuse that a family can give it. Not to mention that a 5x8 is only $149.

Last but not least, how about a rug that epitomizes the Lodge look? The Jackson Hole rug from Estate collection by Mohawk Select does just that. With a look that is taken right out of the hunting lodges of Wyoming, this rug will surely transform your room into Lodge, or if it is Lodge that you already have, it will meld easily into the décor of your home. This area rug is machine woven of 100% polypropylene right here in the USA, and comes in two of the most asked for sizes in area rugs.

Finally, feel free to browse through all of the Rugs to My Door Lodge Rugs, because there are pages of them, many more than I can feature in an entry here. Plus, if you order by Wednesday March 18th, you’ll get FREE Shipping, FREE 30-day in home trial and a $50 Visa Gift Card. Just follow the instructions and make sure you spend at least $299 and you are all set.

Blend Baby Blend

My grandmother taught me years ago – guys your belt matches your shoes and gals your shoes match your bag. She’d be all over me if I was wearing a brown belt with black shoes and she’d never leave home in grey pumps and a tan bag... NEVER! So, how does this translate into your home? Very simply, make sure things work together. Your window-treatments should blend (we don’t “match” things in interior design, we BLEND them) with your flooring. Your wall color should take its cues from the fabrics or rugs you are using. Your accent pillows should pull from an accent color in your area rug or other fabrics. Dress your room like you would dress yourself – eclectic is fine if there is some common theme. Formal is beautiful if things flow – if you can put an outfit together you can easily decorate your rooms, your home, your back yard… the principles are the same the palette and the scales are just a bit bigger.

Because we are talking about making things flow in your room I want to spot light one of our newest rug vendors, Klaussner. Klaussner has been a furniture manufacturer for years, creating some beautiful pieces. You have more than likely seen pieces they have created in your local furniture stores, anything from bedroom suites, to sofas, to occasional pieces – they do it. Well in the past couple of years they have gotten into area rugs. Creating rugs that blend seamlessly with the furniture they create (and even with items they don’t produce) Klaussner’s rug take into account all the trends that are in the furniture market right now, making sure they blend with the styles, colors and textures that people are working with.

I’m listing some examples of their products below to show you not only what they do, but that you will easily be able to find a rug to work with your décor.

They have three main collections and they break down very easily. The Contemporary Collection has items that are distinctly contemporary and work well in modern settings with modern pieces of furniture. A rug like the Fresh Start rug in Wheat is a good example. It’s a contemporary design, but the coloring makes sure it works with the micro-suedes and modern furniture found in today’s home. This rug is hand-tufted in India from 100% wool and will last for years.

The Klaussner Casual collection brings you one of the hottest trends we see these days in area rugs. There are all sorts of names for it whether it is “Transitional” or “Casual” or “Soft Contemporary” these rugs are neither Contemporary nor Traditional – the flow between the two – they are rugs that are made to fit the looser lifestyle that people want today. They use bold patterns, but with soft colors and are made to blend seamlessly into any décor. The Soul Mates rug in Gold is a perfect example of this. An oversize traditional motif, done in soft golds and beiges works in rooms from traditional to contemporary.

Finally, there is the Klaussner Classics line – it’s exactly what you would expect, classically traditional rugs that work for so many of us. What you come to expect when you look for an oriental area rug. You can see the Bolero rug done in Rust and Beige here and see that although the design is traditional, the colors are modern and will fit easily into your decorating schemes.

So, there you have it, blending, making sure the shoes and the bags, the belts and the loafers, blend seamlessly throughout your home.

Zen and the Art of Area Rugs

Zen seems to be a buzz word these days. Rooms with an Asian flair – that create that Zen-like retreat. Well I would like to introduce you to the Koi line from Momeni. This line of area rugs is hand tufted in China from 100% wool and incorporates Chinese characters, Asian motifs, and designs. With five great sizes including a round and runner, these are good rugs to look at if you are trying to create your Zen retreat.

Let’s start with the KO-04 Beige area rug. With its oversize Asian inspired design, this rug adds warmth with its rich beige back-ground and pop with the black branches and red berries. By not being overtly Asian this rug will fit nicely into any room.

Now, let’s go full tilt Zen with KO-01 Black – with its Chinese characters and striking contemporary lay-out this rug is perfect for those that have a craving for anything Chinese and perfect in creating a very Asian inspired room.

Finally, a rug that is inspired by the pagodas and magnificence of the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace in Beijing, KO-12 Red. This beautiful area rug has magnificent details and coloring. If you want a rug that truly speaks to the Emperors of China, to the history that you find in the hutongs and Palaces of Beijing, this is the rug.

Make sure you browse through the rest of the Koi collection – there are a few more examples of Asian inspired rugs for you to see. I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues

Do you need some calm back in your life? I know I could, so I’ve been investigating inexpensive ways (rather than the weekly massage and jetting off to Tahiti) to bring some tranquility back into my life. One of the easiest ways I have found to do this is to begin to infuse the color blue into my surroundings. Blue is a color that is calming – and one of the newest shades to bring that calm into your home is a frosty light blue. Whether it is a grey based or a blue-green these shades of blue are the way to bring a safe haven into your home.

One of the things to remember when working with these icy (yet calming) blues is to pair it with warmer colors to keep your room from looking like you are in an ice palace. Good places to look for accents to a soothing blue are with soft creams, warm browns (think of the wonderful spa color palette) reds, yellows… well you get the picture – pair your blue with something on the opposite side of the color wheel.

If painting seems too much how about starting off with an area rug that brings the blues and calm into your room. I’ve pulled some rugs from our various collections to give you ideas on the different styles and different ways you can use these rugs to put the blues into your rooms.

Let’s start with the rug from the Sandra Lee collection from Feizy. It is a brilliant ice blue color, with tone on tone traditional motifs – but done in such a way that it will easily work in rooms from modern to traditional. This rug is hand-tufted in India from faux silk giving it a sheen that will sparkle.

Here is a prime example of taking an icy blue and pairing it with a warm brown to bring out the best in both colors. This area rug from the Andy Warhol collection from Sphinx is hand-tufted out of wool and comes in four easy to use sizes.

Finally, from Nina Upson Home comes the Bozza Blue rug. It pairs a frosty blue with a warm cream in an over-sized traditional motif that will work in almost any décor. This rug is made from family friendly polypropylene and comes in two of our most popular rug sizes.

So, if you don’t want to paint or buy new furniture, why not bring some calm frosty blue into your home with a new (and inexpensive) area rug? We have pages upon pages of blue rugs for you to peruse – so grab a cup of coffee (or tea) and chill.

Wool rugs, polypropylene rugs-what does it all mean?

Recently I installed a new handknotted area rug in my offic.e It is made of New Zealand Wool which was semi worsted and scoured to ensure no fuzzing or pilling. I find this to be a fascinating subject. But when I was sharing it with a good friend of mine, he looked away as if to say "boring" who cares about rugs?

It was then that I realized that rugs may be my passion, but they are not everyone's passion. So how do you know when the rugs you are choosing are right for your home-and particularly for the application you would like to use them in?

Rugs from Oriental Weavers

Rugs come from all sorts of areas, and are made in an ever increasing range of ways. So how do you choose the right rug to go with, especially when they all seem to look of similar quality online? One way to very quickly take the guesswork out of the rugs you are considering is by selecting a rug from Oriental Weavers. Oriental Weavers rugs are made several different ways, they vary by the collection.

The common thread between all Oriental Weavers rugs however is that they all pass very stringent quality control guidelines and are very heavily stocked in a large facility outside Atlanta, GA. Some rugs offered by Oriental Weavers are even available with a 10 year warranty against staining! That's right a real 10 year warranty against staining. There is not a bunch of mumbo jumbo about not being allowed to use the rugs on a floor or some such nonsense. The rules include:

1) The rug must be used in a residential setting (IE don't go putting the rugs on the floor of a convention center and then complain that it looks bad) :)

2) Don't spill oil on the rug. Oil is the kryptonite of these rugs. So no vegetable oil, hand lotion, etc. The special fiber does not like oil.

Other than those two really easy rules, these rugs are amazing and will last for a full 10 years without stains.

Check them out, and along the way if you have any questions be sure to give us a shout.

Hand knotted Rugs

What is the difference between all these different types of rugs that are offered? There are machine woven rugs, hand tufted rugs, and hand knotted rugs. So how do you know which is which and what quality each rug is and their benefits and pitfalls?

Well suffice it to say you are in good hands. With over fifteen years of solid experience in the rug industry including ten years of working for Oriental Weavers any questions you may have about area rugs may be easily answered.

Hand knotted rugs are the high end of the rug assortment due to the amount of time involved in creating the rugs along with the amount of skill required to produce such rugs.

There are many different types of knots, just like there are many different types of sailor's knots. They usually vary by region of the world, and are passed on from generation to generation, each rug craftsperson emulating what the previous generation had done.

When a hand knotted rug is finished, it is often the result of several months of effort, with larger rugs composed of smaller knot taking the greatest amount of time to complete. Rugs in certain parts of the world such as Afghanistan are sometimes made in the home. For instance, many women in Afghanistan earn their living by knotting rugs on frames set up in their living room. Due to cultural guidelines, women are discouraged from working outside the home and must sell their rugs through a male rug finisher/broker. The process is meant to respect the conservative religious culture that is strongly adhered to in Afghanistan.

Other major areas that we purchase hand knotted rugs from include India and China. With the increasing quantity of goods coming from both these areas, quality was at one time a concern. However in more recent years, rug suppliers have hired brokers to conduct random quality checks of rug knotting facilities as well as sampling rugs from a container bound for the United States to ensure the quality of the rugs are in keeping with the rug supplier's standards.

As you consider rugs for the home, be mindful of the hand knotted category. The rugs contained therein are some of the most elegant and breathtaking pieces available to mankind. Consider passing rugs down from generation to generation-each piece crafted by an artisan that takes great pride in their craft.

Until next time, good rug shopping to you.
